American Indian Institute Hosts Health and Wellness Training Programs

 

American Indian Institute at the University of OklahomaThe American Indian Institute will host two, three-day programs on health promotion and social marketing and a five-day conference on wellness, spanning March 16-22, 2012 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, in San Diego, Calif. The Native Fitness Training and Introduction to Social Marketing programs will both be held March 16-18.

The Native Fitness Training is an introductory training program designed for experienced and non-experienced individuals interested in becoming community fitness leaders and instructors. Upon completing the three-day program, participants will be prepared to implement and instruct aerobic exercise classes in their Native communities. The registration fee is $350 and does not provide a personal training certification.

Introduction to Social Marketing is designed for tribal health administrators and directors. Robert John, professor, and chair of the Department of Health Promotion Sciences in the College of Public Health at the University of Oklahoma will provide an overview of social marketing, focus group research, program design, implementation, and evaluation. The registration fee is $675 and includes all training materials.

The 11th Native Women & Men’s Wellness Conference, March 18-22, brings together individuals representing academia, tribal health systems, public health researchers, practitioners, behavioral health, and tribal members nationwide. Areas of focus are comprehensive, creating a forum for partnership and discussion. General sessions, workshops, and wellness activities will focus on behavioral health, diabetes prevention, and public health wellness, using a blend of traditional and contemporary strategies. The early registration fee is $400. After December 31, the cost is $450, and late registration (March 1-22) is $500. Special rates for elders and presenters are also available.
