OU Precollegiate Programs to Host Summer Camps
Precollegiate Programs, a department of OU Outreach, is hosting summer camps at the University of Oklahoma for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. These camps, offered at different times throughout the summer, provide academic experiences and leadership training for pre-college age students. This year, 12 different summer programs will be offered, with topics including aviation, chemistry, meteorology, geology and more.
“We offer activities that are not found in the traditional classroom,” said Cassie Eads, program director of Precollegiate Programs. “It is inspiring to see students interested and impacted by learning. It is also extremely rewarding to reconnect with former campers who are now attending OU.”
Classes are filling up fast, but space is still available in Horizons Unlimited and Mini College. For more information on other camps or to see other programs offered by Precollegiate Programs, visit youth.ou.edu. Also, those interested may contact Precollegiate Programs at (405) 325-6897.
Horizons Unlimited is available to academically gifted and talented 6th – 9th graders and offers two sessions. Session I, for rising 8th – 9th grade students, centers around the chemistry in everyday life and will run July 11-15, 9am – 5pm. Session II, for rising 6th – 7th grade students, will focus on the study and preservation of wildlife and will run July 18-22, 9am to 5pm.
In the Session I – Chemistry in Everyday Life, students will learn through hands-on experiments how chemical processes impact our daily lives. In Session II – Wild about Wildlife, students will focus on wildlife and the technology being used to study and protect them for future generations. Mini College is for 1st through 6th graders and will be held on the OU campus in Norman. Session I will run July 25-29, Session II will run August 1-5 and Session III will run August 8-12.
Mini College is an all-day program designed for students who are interested in building their knowledge of the world around them. Students will be grouped by grade levels and will attend three different classes daily. At the end of each day, students will relax and have fun at the OU pool. The theme of this year’s Mini College is “Road to Rio: Summer Olympics 2016.” Students will study the science and humanities behind Summer Olympics through sports journalism, biology, engineering, music, and much more.
