ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Campers Spend Morning with Veteran Astronaut

June 20 was an exciting day for campers in the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp. Veteran astronaut Bernard Harris and ExxonMobil engineer Shawn Simmons spent the morning with campers and helped them complete an activity centered around landing a spacecraft on Mars.

During his visit, Harris shared some of his experiences of being an astronaut and going into space and answered various questions from students. Simmons talked about the career options people in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields have, specifically the ability to travel all around the world like she has.

Below you can see images from the morning, which include Harris and Simmons speaking to the students as well as helping the students during their activity. The students were tasked with making a spacecraft out of various materials that could land safely on the surface of Mars without injuring the astronauts inside. At the end of the activity, each team tested its prototype to see which had the safest spacecraft construction.
