President's Day of Learning

OU Outreach Assists Planning for President’s Day of Learning

This year, President David Boren will be hosting the first President’s Day of Learning. This new initiative will focus on allowing University alumni and friends the opportunity to “come back to college for a day.”

The event will begin on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. That night, participants will enjoy a welcome reception and dinner followed by a lecture by award-winning teacher and OU historian David Levy on the University’s early history.

Saturday morning will feature lectures from Shubham Pant, assistant professor of Hematology and Oncology, Andrew Porwancher, assistant professor of Classics and Letters, David Ray, dean of OU’s Honors College, and Joshua Landis, associate professor of International and Area Studies. They will speak on topics such as the difficulties of fighting cancer, Gilded Age murder trials, American politics and the Syrian revolution.

In the afternoon, Kenneth Copeland, professor, and chair of Pediatrics will speak on the future of medicine and medical research. Kyle Harper, senior vice provost and associate professor of Classics and Letters, will also lecture on how the political philosophy of the classical world shaped modern civilization. Finally, during the last session, Joseph Thai, professor of law, will speak on free speech and campaign financing, while Mariam Mufti, assistant professor in International and Area Studies, will lecture on the United States’ future foreign policy decisions concerning South Asia.

Both lunch and dinner will be provided to attendees on Saturday. After the lectures, the annual President’s Concert, featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 will conclude the day.

Register online at www.outreach.ou.edu or by calling (405) 325-3488. The registration fee of $85 for individuals or $150 for couples includes the reception/dinner on Friday night, all lectures, the Saturday luncheon, and dinner and the evening concert. The registration deadline is April 1.

The President’s Day of Learning is a collaborative effort from several campus departments, with Outreach serving as the liaison between the Office of the President, Public Affairs, and the Alumni Office. OU Outreach was initially connected to the event through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at OU, with OLLI at OU director Chris Elliott coordinating much of the effort for the event

In preparation for the April 19-20 weekend, OU Outreach worked with the Office of the President in the coordination and logistics of the weekend by helping with faculty recruitment, registration, and the budgeting. OU Outreach’s Marketing and Communication department was also instrumental in writing and designing the brochure and other materials as well as helping with marketing the event.

OU Outreach partnered with Saxum Strategic Communications to provide social media and graphics support in marketing the event. Saxum is a PR, advertising and digital firm with offices in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
